Corporate institutions support Farmers Day

Accra, Oct. 17, GNA – Dr Nurah Gyiele, the
Minister of State in charge of Food and Agriculture, on Wednesday received
donations from some corporate institutions in support of the 34th Farmers
Day celebrations.

The companies are Ghana Cement, which donated
1,000 bags of cement; LK International Company-Ghana, GH¢20,000.00; and Super
Maritime Ghana, GH¢1,000.00.

Other are the Ghana Maritime Authority, GH¢10,000.00;
and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), GH¢20,000.00 and seven boxes
of machetes. 

The celebration, slated for December 7, 2018
would be hosted by the Northern Regional Coordinating Council at Tamale at the
Alhaji Aliu Mahama’s Sports Stadium.

The event will be graced by President Nana
Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and it would be held under the theme: “Agriculture:
Moving Ghana beyond Aid.”

This year’s celebration will begin on November
29, 2018 with eight days of exhibition, which will be opened by the Dr Mahamudu
Bawumia, the Vice President, and will be climaxed with a celebration to reward
and honour the nation’s hard working farmers.

Receiving the donations, Dr Gyiele thanked the
donors for their kind gesture and assured them of the Ministry’s commitment to
use the donations for its intended purpose.

He said the Ministry is currently meeting with
exhibitors interested in exhibiting their products.

Mr Morten Gade, Managing Director of GHACEM,
said the company remains a proud sponsor of the farmers’ day celebration as
agriculture is the backbone of Ghana’s economy.

He said the rationale of the event was in line
with one of the objectives of GHACEM global sustainability programme of helping
the development of communities in which ‘we live and work.’

Mr Gade said GHACEM flagship Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) programme, the GHACEM Cement Foundation has contributed
and continues to provide free cement for infrastructure development for
deprived schools and hospitals in the country.

Ms Jennifer Sowah, the Customer Service
Manager of LK International Ghana, said the company, which deals in motor tricycles,
promotes agriculture through the sale of tricycles to help smallholder farmers
in transporting their farm produce to marketing centres.

She said the company found it necessary as
part of their CSR to donate to the Ministry in support of the farmers’ day
celebration.
