Chairman of the National Media Commission, Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng has called on media owners to provide conducive environments for their staff and also adequately resource journalists in order to improve the quality of their work.

According to him, even though there is a clarion call on journalists to step up their standards, it is also important for media owners to provide the necessary safety and resources for their staff.

Nana Gyan-Apenteng said this in an interview with Class News on the sidelines of the launch of the West Africa Media Excellence Conference and Awards 2018 in Accra.

He said: “Journalism is not just a job, it’s a vocation, it’s a calling, and if you come into it, you know that there is a level of risk involved but that does not mean that we should be exposed to risk.

“When we talk of quality journalism, one of the things we need to talk about is the safety and protection of journalists and of their working environment and all the rest of it. So, again, we have a very wide variation.

“What we have to do is to understand that standards are important not just in terms of the content but of the working environment, of the welfare of journalists, all those things contribute to the end result which would be quality journalism”.
