The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has said names of companies importing substandard goods unto the Ghanaian market will only be published after it has satisfied itself of being on the right side of the law.

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) on Wednesday gave the Authority a seven-day ultimatum to publish names of all companies flooding the Ghanaian market with inferior products.

“If that report or the names of the companies are not published, CPA will go to court to seek the guidance of the court to force professor Alexander Nii Oto Dodou to release the names,” the Chief Executive Officer of the CPA, Kofi Kapito declared at a press conference.

“The time has come to do name and shame.”

Reacting to the ultimatum, the Executive Director of the GSA, Professor Dodou said the Authority is aware of the demand of the CPA to publish the names of the substandard-products-importing companies and for that to happen the Authority has to be convinced it’s on the right side of the law.

“Our view as an authority is that, we are in the same boat with the Consumer Protection Agency that consumers must be protected,” said Professor Dodou, adding: “We have received their thing [letter]. We are reviewing it and see what actions we can legally take in order to be on the right side of the law.

“We will be responding to them and that response could include reporting on the issues if legally permitted, if not we will also make them aware. And if we are compelled by court we will definitely respect the court order and we will do that immediately.”
