Yara Ghana support women farmers with fertilizer

Timber Nkwanta (E/R), Oct. 2, GNA – Yara
Ghana, a fertilizer manufacturing Company has supported two women farmer
groups, Development Action Association (DAA) and St Cecelia Women Group with
1,800 bags of fertilizer.

The support follows a global competition
organized for Yara in Africa which was targeted at women farmer groups in
countries where Yara operates and was won by the two female farmer groups.

DAA, is a women farmer group, which came out
of FAO project done over 20 years ago named, “Freedom from hunger campaign
action for development”.

After the project, the beneficiaries decided
to come together to sustain the project, champion the welfare of women and
drive their farming business.

The group currently has a membership of 3,000
which comprise of fish processors, vegetable farmers, livestock producers, rice
farmers and cassava processors from Eastern, Greater Accra, Central and Volta
Regions.

Presenting the fertilizer to the DAA at Timber
Nkwanta in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region, the Yara Ghana
Managing Director Mr. Danquah Addo-Yobo said, the aim of the presentation was
to support the women to increase their yields and improve on their farming
business.

‘’After the fertilizer support, we are also
going to sensitize them on the fertilizer application, so that their knowledge
on its application and other farming practices is improved,” he added.

He said Yara engages various women farmer
groups with different form of support, however, they have realized that women
were important and due to their vulnerability they needed extra support at all
times.

The Executive Director of Development Action
Association (DAA), Ms Lydia Sasu who received the items on behalf of the women
group, said the material was going to help support the women to work hard and
increase their yields.

She indicated that 300 women farmers from
their group were going to benefit directly from the support being given by
Yara.

The Eastern Regional Director of Ministry of
Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Mr Henry Crentsil Junior, commended the women
farmers for their contribution in promoting the farming business and encouraged
them to continue striving for success.
