The motion was ‘The Double Track System is a Threat to Good Quality Education’
Four intelligent girls left audience at the Luv FM High School Debate in awe as they advance arguments for and against the newly-introduced double-track system at second cycle institutions.
Rebecca Adu-Gyimah and Priscilla Amponsah of Adventist Senior High School, joined Asakia Hawaw Hanan and Huda Abdul Karim to give a boost to emerging female dominance in the competition.
The motion was “The Double Track System is a Threat to Good Quality Education.”
With verifiable references to support their arguments, both sides provided some food for thought for policy makers and implementers.
Adventist Girls S.H.S. who spoke for the motion was of the view that the double track system comes with a reduction in the number of teaching days from 180 to 162, and an uneven distribution of experienced teachers.
The school’s two female contestants also cited lack of a corresponding amount of resources to increasing enrolment and increased number of day students irrespective of the distance between students’ homes and their schools.
Rebecca and Priscilla also think lack of proper planning has left many schools in a confused state on how to manage the Green and Gold tracks.
T.I. Ahmadiyya S.H.S., on the other hand, argued that the system has eased congestion besides creating more space for a lot more Ghanaians to have access to second-cycle education.
They also indicated the double-track ensures maximum use of school resources, reduces teacher fatigue due to the 40-day rest.
Besides the vacation period that each track affords, it also enables technical students, especially, to be attached to Industry for practical training.
In the closest contest so far, T.I Ahmadiyya progressed to the next stage, beating Adventist Girls by 235 points to 230.
