Accra, Sept. 26-
(DPA/GNA) – Russia’s parliament on Wednesday unanimously confirmed President
Vladimir Putin’s proposal to raise the pension age for women by five years, to
60, instead of the initially considered eight years.

The lower house of
parliament approved raising the pension age by five years for both genders,
with men intended to retire now at 65, the legislature said.

There were 385 votes
in favour, none against and no abstentions, the legislature said in a statement
on its website. Putin still needs to sign the bill for it to become law.

The pension reform
plans evoked an outcry in recent months, inciting waves of protests throughout
the country.

Forty-three per cent
of Russian men are not expected to reach the age of 65, with the average life
expectancy in Russia at 66 for men and 77 for women, according to World Bank
data from two years ago.
