Kpone, Sept. 20, GNA – The Kpone-Katamanso
Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has
intensified its campaign on child protection in the area.

Mr Seth Gyamfi, the Municipal Senior Civic
Education Officer (SCEO), in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said
civic educators will visit homes and educate parents on their civic
responsibilities and the need to protect and provide for their children.

Mr Gyamfi said most parents in the area did
not take keen interest in the day to day activities of their children as they
concentrated more on their businesses at the disadvantage of the children.

He indicated that some parents had even turned
their children into labourers while others used them for hawking instead of
sending them to school.

He disclosed that child labour, child abuse,
teenage pregnancy and drug abuse among others, were gaining grounds in the
Municipality, a situation he described as very worrying.

The SCEO added that every parent was required
by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana to protect their children and to educate them
as a matter of right.

Mr Gyamfi appealed to government and faith
based organizations to assist the NCCE to educate all parents on child rights
and protection in the various communities in the Municipality as failure to do
so would result in dire consequences to society in future.
