A Tamale District Court One today [Monday], September 17, 2018, acquitted and discharged a male nurse of the Damongo Catholic Hospital who was accused of raping a sick Italian woman who had visited the health facility for medical care.

The 28-year-old nurse, Ernest Green, was arrested by the Damongo District Police following a formal complaint that he had raped the woman at the health facility.

The suspect was transferred to the Northern Regional Police Command where he was out before court.

Ernest Green has since been standing trial until he was finally acquitted and discharged by His Lordship, Anthony Ansah of the Tamale District Court One.

The Judge in dismissing the case said there wasn’t ample evidence against the accused.

Ernest Green’s relatives and colleagues rejoiced over the court ruling.

The leader of the Damongo Catholic Hospital Chapter of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Ngmenbon Aidan, in a Citi News interview said the outcome of the ruling was a great relief for them.

He said nurses and other paramedical staff who earlier laid down their tools in solidarity with Ernest Green have been vindicated.

Ngmenbon Aidan reassured the general public that nurses and staff of the Damongo Catholic Hospital could be trusted for respecting the human rights of people who visit the health facility for medical care.

Background

The suspect was arrested after the incident was reported to them by the complainant, an elderly Italian national.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mohammed Yussif Tanko, narrated that the incident according to the complainant happened on Friday, April 6, 2018, at about 4.00 am in a private ward of the hospital.

The complainant said she was rushed to the hospital at about 11:50 pm the previous day suffering from malaria.

She said the suspect approached her and told her the hospital had a private ward if she would like to take it and she agreed, adding that she got up at dawn and managed to make it to the washroom and on her return, she found it difficult to climb back on to the bed and the suspect came around to assist her onto the bed.

The complainant said the suspect sat by her side and started touching her, but she was too weak to resist and that suddenly the suspect took her breast into his mouth, removed her panties and had unprotected sex with her.
