Accra, Sep. 14, GNA – The Ark Foundation, a
Non-Governmental Organisation for compassionate care and social action has
launched a sensitisation programme to help raise the awareness and educate
students on child abuse.
The Schools Sensitisation Programme seeks to
help teachers and students to understand the concepts of physical, emotional
and sexual abuse; as well as help them learn the behaviours and signs of abuse.
Mr Rex Delanyo, the Programmes Coordinator of
the schools programme, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an
interview, said students will also learn what constituted abuse, how to protect
themselves from all forms of abuse, and where to seek help.
Mr Delanyo questioned the society’s
perceptions and attitudes towards discipline, saying that the emotional and
physical abuse of children is generally accepted as “discipline and it is,
therefore, necessary to begin questioning such perceptions and attitudes that
The sensitisation programme has so far been
implemented in eight schools in the Greater Accra Region namely: Kwabenya
Senior High School, West Africa Senior High School, Holy Trinity Senior High
School, Osu Presbyterian Senior High School, St. John’s Grammar Senior High
School, Achimota Senior High School, Presbyterian Boys Senior High School,
Madina Senior High School, and Faith Baptist Junior High School.
“Throughout the campaign, we interacted with
about 120 teachers and 3,500 students, who asked a lot of critical questions.
It was discovered that some students were being abused by their teachers and
their fellow students, while some teachers were being abused by some students.
Likewise, some students are being abused at
home by their relatives, and therefore, need assistance,” he stated.
The questions have been compiled and will be
presented to Volunteer Counsellors at the Ark Foundation, adding that
sensitisation programme would be replicated in selected schools throughout the
country, he added.
The Ark Foundation is a human rights
organisation with a primary purpose of providing compassionate care for the
vulnerable in society, especially women and children.
