Former Asante Kotoko striker Wilberforce Mfum believes his former employers have underachieved as they celebrate their 83rd birthday on Friday.
The Porcupine Warriors are one of the two glamorous clubs in Ghana, having won the domestic league title a record 23 times, and have won the African Champions League twice.
Despite their success on the continental front, Kotoko have been standing still for some time as they lack the requisite facility to compete with the giants on the continent.
“If I look at Kotoko after 83 years and the state it finds itself, it saddens me and every other supporter of Kotoko. A club of Kotoko’s calibre doesn’t even have a stadium. Little things that could be done to make the club stand firm they can’t do it and none of its chairmen has ever thought to do the right thing,” Mfum told Happy FM
“Come to think of it, we’ve bought a team bus but common insurance for the bus we couldn’t do it. Why? You make us feel very sad. The state we find Kotoko is not something to smile about”, he added
He advised the current management to do an explicit recruitment to beef up the ‘old fashioned’ crop of players they have in camp now.
“Most of the current players in the team do not deserve to don the porcupine Jersey. If they’re recruiting they must get the best to join because those playing now lack the strength to be at Kotoko.”
“If you spend much to get the best players for the team and they start winning matches, the supporters will troop to watch their matches for them to get profit. The players used for the past seasons were not good at all. So they must find the best to fix into the team”, he cautioned.
