Wa, Aug 21, GNA – Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan,
Upper West Regional Minister has appealed to Islamic teachers in the country to
preach against negative practices including; gambling, alcoholism and drug
abuse in order to protect the youth from destroying themselves.

He said the practices which were common among
the youth promoted laziness and crime as well as contributed to the declining
morals in society.

Alhaji Alhassan who made the appeal during the
Eid-ul Adha prayers in Wa also advised the youth against impatience, stressing
that anyone that was impatient in life was likely to engage in dubious means of
acquiring wealth.

He urged well-to-do Muslims to be
compassionate to the plight of the needy in society by extending a helping hand
to the many orphans and brilliant but needy children in their communities in
order to gain the blessings of Allah.

The Regional Minister used the occasion to
educate the people on some government policies and programmes, saying the
challenges identified during the implementation of the policy last academic
year were being resolved.

He said one of the measures government
intended to implement this academic year was to address congestion as a result
of high intake of students during the double track system and therefore
appealed for the support of parents and guardians in the implementation of the
policy he described as a novelty.

He noted that the one-village-one-dam policy
which was expected to provide water for irrigation, livestock rearing and
domestic use during the dry season had commenced with the selection of 10
communities in each district in the region.

Alhaji Alhassan said the Planting for Food and
Jobs programme was being complemented with the Planting for Export and Rural
Development was geared towards encouraging the production of cash crops such as
cashew, mango, shea and others for export.

He appealed to all including the youth to take
advantage of the policy to better their lot.

Alhaji Dr. Suleiman Bakuri, the Imam of the Wa
Central Mosque who led the Eid-ul Adha prayers prayed for Allah’s vision and
direction for President Nana Akufo-Addo and his appointees.
