8 people died in the floods
The Ashanti Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said eight people were killed by floods in June this year in that part of Ghana.
Mr Abdul-Bassit Abdulai, Head of Emergency Operation Office, said the deaths were recorded within two days between 28 and 30 June.
“…From 28th of June to 30th, we recorded about eight confirmed deaths as we have it on our records,” he told Adehye FM’s Elisha Adarkwah on Friday, 20 July 2018.
Some parts of Kumasi and its adjoining districts have been experiencing persistent flooding. Apart from the loss of lives, hundreds of residents were also displaced and rendered homeless as a result of the heavy rains.
Areas that persistently experience flooding include: Anloga Junction, Dekyemso, Airport Roundabout, Aboabo Pelele and Asabi Junction.
Mr Abdulai, in a sideline interview at a public education forum held on flooding organised by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in collaboration with NADMO for residents of Esereso in the Bosomtwe District, said one person from the town also died as a result of the floods.
He advised Ghanaians to desist from building in waterways and dumping waste in drains.
He also entreated people who reside in flood-prone areas to evacuate any time there is a sign of rainfall.
For his part, the Ashanti Regional Fire Service Commander, ACFO Joshua Nguah highlighted the necessity of public education in order to prevent destruction of property and loss of lives during the rainy season which is expected to last for months.
