The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has warned that it will not tolerate delays from government in evicting foreigners from Ghana’s retail market.

The warning follows a recent announcement by the Ministry of Trade and Industry to evict all foreign retailers from the local retail centers by the 27th of this month.

Ghanaian traders have on numerous occasions lamented the effects the activities of foreign retailers on their businesses and profits.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, president of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng said government must be fully committed to its words and undertake the exercise.

“We would also caution the authorities including the National Security that after the deadline, expectations of the trading community will be very high on enforcement of the law”, he said.

“Any delay or failure in that regard can cause serious havoc to the country as members of the public can no longer trust the authorities and laws of the country,” he added.

He appealed that the committee in charge of the operation should be adequately resourced to ensure a successful operation.

“The importance of Foreign Retail Trade Committee cannot be overemphasized and should, therefore, be given serious attention, adequately resourced effectively supervised and monitored,” he observed.

“This will enable the committee to execute its mandate successfully without any hindrance to save a looming terrible situation from happening”.
