A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Professor Fred Binka said the University of Ghana should be allowed to manage the newly opened University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC).

The 650-bed capacity hospital was opened to the general public, albeit for referral cases, effective Wednesday July 18, 2018.

In an interview with 3FM’s Sunrise host Winston Amoah on Wednesday, Prof Fred Binka stated that authorities of the University of Ghana should be made to manage the health facility.

“I think the ministry should play its role as the supervisory agency and make sure people are doing what they are to do. Supervision is as important as anything, so leave the university to implement it and then you supervise it.”

According to him, the Health Ministry has its hands full with other responsibilities and may not be able to effectively run the UGMC.

“I think the ministry has too many facilities to be running and struggling with, and it must not add this to its plate. Most of the people who will be handling this facility are going to be consultants from the university; the top hierarchy. So how is the ministry planning to run that?” Prof Binka questioned.

The tussle between the Ministry of Health and the University of Ghana has lingered on with the former unwilling to allow the University of Ghana run the facility, a situation which led to a delay in opening the facility.
