The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has successfully completed a week’s training session for security persons in the maritime industry.

The personnel comprised the Ghana Navy, Marine Police, Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ports Security and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) as well as others in the maritime industry.

According to the Authority, the intent of holding the training is to strengthen security at sea, and further protect the country’s territorial waters.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, 12 July 2018 at the end of the training, the Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Kwame Owusu, said the trainees were taken through rigorous sessions aimed at equipping them to help combat piracy and other related offences at sea.

One of the trainers, Eric Glotin, who doubles as an expert and a counsellor at the AU Centre for Regional Maritime Security, noted that the training became necessary owing to the influx of pirates.
