Ejisu (Ash), June 25, GNA – A total of 767
farmers, mostly the youth, have been engaged under the Planting for Food and
Jobs (PFJ) programme introduced by the Government in the Ejisu Municipality.

They have planted maize, rice, pepper, onion,
tomatoes, cucumber and cabbage on a total of 1,570 acres of land in various
communities in the Municipality.

Mr Patrick Akowuah, the Municipal Director of
Agriculture, made these known at a town hall meeting at Ejisu.

It was organized by the Information Services
Department (ISD), to create a platform for the citizens to interact with
officials of the Municipal Assembly to get firsthand information on some of the
activities and programmes being implemented in various communities by the
Assembly.

Mr Akowuah said the aim of PFJ was to help
create jobs, especially for the youth to increase agricultural yield to ensure
that there was enough food supply in the country throughout the year.

He said the farmers have been supplied with
quality high-yielding seeds for planting while fertilizers would be sold to
them at subsidized prices.

Mr Akowuah explained that the PFJ program
focused on five main pillars: seed and fertilizer supply, extension service
delivery to farmers, marketing and monitoring.

He was hopeful that the people in the
Municipality would not experience food shortage this year as a result of the
increase in agricultural production.

Mr Akowuah urged the youth to take advantage
of the program to create employment for themselves and improve on their living
conditions.
