Accra, June 19, GNA – Madam Charlotte Osei,
the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, on Tuesday enlightened
pupils of East Airport International School in Accra on environmental
cleanliness.

She urged the pupils to desist from acts that
had the potential to deteriorate the environment and adapt the principle of
reducing, reusing and recycling of plastic materials.

Madam Osei, who is also an ambassador for the
National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), was sensitising the pupils on
environment as part of the commission’s citizenship week celebration on the
theme: “The Environment and You”.

She indicated that when the environment was
not kept well, it would have the potency of endangering the sustainability of a
healthy society.

In an interactive session with the pupils, she
said every member of the society was trusted with the role of promoting good
ecological practices and to report individuals who are determined to destroy
the environment.

Some of the pupils identified key challenges
in society and suggested ways of mitigating them to ensure that their future
was secured.

Madam Osei also educated the pupils on the
issue of “Galamsey”, thus, illegal and unlicensed small scale mining.

Asked the use of gutters in the communities,
some of the pupils said it was meant to carry sewages to their final
destination while another pupil said it was meant to serve waterways.

Madam Osei quickly made the correction that
gutters were not made to carry garbage but for drainage purposes, adding that,
there was the need to identify the actual usage of social facilities for
effective and efficient use.

In unison, the pupils pledged their support
and commitment to ensuring that the environment was freed from filth and made
healthier to guarantee a sustainable and healthy country.

Mrs Mabel Owusu-Addo, the Principal of the
School commended the NCCE for choosing to sensitise the pupils on such a
significant issue of national interest.

Madam Osei interacted one on one with some of
the pupils, advising them to bold and focus on their education as well as in
life, saying that there were many distractions in life but there was the need
to focus.
