Accra, June 19, GNA – The Teranga Lions of Senegal
have recorded the first win for an African country at the ongoing Federation of
International Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in Russia after beating Poland
by 2-1 as Thiago Cionek’s own goal ended the first half in favour of the
African country.

The African contingents of Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria
and Tunisia had all lost their opening fixtures to Uruguay, Iran, Croatia and
England respectively, where all hopes for Africa to shine at the early stages
of the tournament rested on the shoulders of Senegal.

Senegal led by Liverpool midfielder Sadio Mane
made their intentions clear in the early stages of the game by pushing men
forward, which resulted in their 37th minute deflected goal, in a Group H
opener.

M’Baye Niang made it 2:0 for Senegal in the
60th minute to put the game beyond the Polish, who fought hard to redeem a dying
image, which resulted in a consolation goal from Grzegorz Krychowiak in the
86th minute.

Meanwhile earlier in the Group H games, Japan
beat a 10-man Columbian side by 2:1 to set a mouthwatering fixture between Senegal
and Japan on Sunday 24th June, 2018 at 15:00 hours.
