NDC MPs head for Court over neglect of Voter’s ID Card

The Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament are heading to the Supreme Court to challenge the NIA’s refusal to accept the Voter’s ID card as a requirement for the registration of the Ghana Card.

The NDC MPs see the neglect of the Voter’s ID card as a clear violation of the rights of Ghanaians and would therefore be in court to seek for an interpretation of Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution.

MP for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agboza, who dropped the intent of the Minority said they will not sit down for the New Patriotic Party-led government to circumvent the law to detriment of the masses.

According to him, the NDC suspects the NPP has a sinister motif to deny majority of Ghanaians the right to use their Voter’s ID Card to register for the Ghana Card.

Interacting with journalists moments after their encounter with officials of the NIA at the Committee on the Whole, the Adaklu lawmaker said not every Ghanaian has a passport or a birth certificate, therefore denying them the right to use the Voter’s ID card which they used in electing the President of the land is a clear violation of the law.

Although the Minority concedes that Parliament erred in excluding the Voter’s ID Card as a requirement for the registration of the Ghana Card, Mr. Agboza said nothing stops the House from going back to correct the wrong made in the past.

He said the NDC MPs will continue to boycott the registration of the Ghana Card until the right thing is done.

“We are saying that until we seek a proper interpretation of Article 42 and sections of the L.I, the Minority will not be part of this”, he noted.
