A father who fell asleep while waiting for his son to finish night classes fatally shot the boy when he was startled by a knock on the window.

According to the family, 16-year-old Luyanda Themba Tshabalala of South Africa loved learning and was a high achiever who had many awards.

He attended school and he took additional night classes, which the school offered.

The teen asked his father to pick him up after class at about 8:00 p.m.

When the father got there, he parked inside the premises of the Fred Norman Secondary School and waited for his son to call him.

While waiting, the 50-year-old father who is a construction worker, fell asleep.

Meanwhile, the teenager tried calling his father 3 times, and when he did not answer, the son went outside of the school and saw his father’s car parked on the school’s property.

The boy’s stepmother, Sibongile Tshabalala, 47, said that when he got to the car, the boy tried to open the door, but his father had locked the car. He then knocked on the window and
shook the car.

The startled father grabbed his gun and shot his son through the window. The father heard his son screaming: “dad it’s me Themba,” before collapsing in front of his horrified father and female friend.

The suspect claimed that he was startled by his son’s actions and thought that he was being carjacked as they live in a bad neighborhood that has a high crime rate.

The father rushed his son to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries. The father was taken to the police station for questioning.

Police said that they are investigating and they will determine at a later date if the father will be charged with his son’s death.
