Ghanaian farmers must develop the habit of storing their produce as part of efforts in fighting hunger in the country, John Agyekum Kufuor, former President of Ghana, has said.

Mr Kufuor advised the farmers to apply modern agricultural methods in their work in order to grow more crops to feed the larger population and also store their produce.

He noted that food preservation is a major challenge in Ghana and that has resulted in a lot of people going hungry.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday in connection with a report dubbed: “Ghana Zero Hunger Strategic Review Report” compiled by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation, the former president said: “Marketing of food in Ghana is a major challenge, and, so, a lot of the food is going waste.”

He added: “We cannot store food if we are unable to expand our agriculture. In order to expand agriculture, the farmers will need to adopt modern methods of farming – fertiliser application, irrigation farming, value addition and others.”

He expressed confidence that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who launched the report in Accra on Tuesday, 29 May, will implement the findings in order to help his administration deal with food shortage in Ghana.

“The president bought into the idea, launched the report himself and I am confident that he will implement the findings,” he said.
