Ghanaian highlife legend, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, has identified Bisa Kdei as an authentic highlife musician among his peers who are also doing the same genre of music.

According to him, despite the fact that some young artistes like Kwame Eugene, Kwabena Kwabena among others are doing highlife music, Bisa Kdei stands tall.

He told Natalia Andoh on Touch of Class on Class91.3FM on Thursday, 10 May 2018 that: “Some [young artistes] are doing what they call highlife, but when it comes to highlife, Bisa Kdei is the one I can point a finger at and say he is on the right [path].

“Many of his peers were doing hiplife but Bisa Kdei came and proved them wrong. Anytime that Bisa Kdei is performing, you’ll see the younger ones and older ones get involved and dance, that is our heritage and I’m glad he is doing that. I met him in New York and told him he should not deviate, he should keep on moving in that same direction.”

In his opinion, Bisa Kdei is “authentic”.

The multiple award winning musician noted that some of the young artistes mostly fail to demonstrate their culture and heritage whenever they get the opportunity to perform on international platforms.

He noted that: “Some of these young artistes are doing well, but the music that they put [out there], the lyrics or rap, they rely more on foreign influence but we have a heritage, we’re a people that our forefathers have left us with some kind of music. Every country has its form of music, you go to America they play jazz, rap music, when you go to India they play Indian music, when you go to South America they play salsa music so that is the form of identification.

“Our fathers left us with something called highlife, but the younger ones will not sit down and dive into the making of highlife, but every dance music that’s coming from any part of the world has highlife connotations in them and this is what our young artistes haven’t studied till now. So I’m very proud of where I’m coming from, everywhere I go, I represent where I came from musically and intellectually because I know our fathers have left something for us and I have to continue, and in the same format, the younger ones that are coming behind me, I have to show them the way to continue as well.”
