Kumasi-based Policy think-tank, Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBRE), is calling on the government to as a matter of urgency set up job centres in all the district capitals.
CEBRE says job centres will serve as information gathering and collation centres to create a database for job-related issues.
Government over the years have been found wanting when it comes to getting data about jobs created and unemployment rates in the country.
As it stands now there are no reliable data about unemployment in Ghana. Many of the figures put out are at best guesswork or mere estimates.
Creation of these job centres will help curb the unemployment situation in the country.
The job centres, according to Executive Director for CEBRE, Gordon Newlove Asamoah, will work through the following means:
– A job seeker will register with the job centre in their districts;
– Every graduate who completes his national service will also register at the job centre;
– All employers and prospective employers will register and advertise their jobs at the job centre;
-The Jobcentres will match CVs of applicants with the available jobs;
– All those who secure jobs at any point in time are removed from “the unemployed” database to “the employed database”;
– Every month the data is collected from all the centres and collated so that government can determine how many jobs were created at every point in time
Mr Newlove Asamoah says the availability of data is critical to informing and shaping decisions to address various challenges.
“Government can then have accurate data about the unemployment situation in the country so that it can put measures in place to solve it,” he said.
