The Director General of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr. John Ofori Tenkorang has assured pensioners that their pensions are safe in his care in spite of the automation scandal which has rocked the scheme.

According to him, SSNIT has rolled out efficient and effective measures to cut down its expenditure which hitherto takes a chunk of the monies they collect.

Mr. Tenkorang disclosed this in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Monday, after the Board of Trustees of SSNIT begun investigations into how the former management acquired an OBS software System for $66 million.

The system was installed to network all branches of SSNIT nationwide to enhance efficiency but the current administration questioned the cost and contracted PricewaterhouseCoopers to audit the transaction.

After the audit, it emerged that the system was not working and also did not add any value to SSNIT’s operations.

As a result, Mr. Tenkorang said they were working assiduously to ensure the system acquired gives them value for money.

As an immediate measure, he said he decided as a Director General not to travel on First Class tickets but second class while other staff use economy instead of business.

“We are cutting costs. We are mindful so I can assure Ghanaians that their monies are safe and all shall be well. So there is no need for panic,” he added.
