A former Vice Chancellor of University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi, has debunked rumours that he handpicked his successor as the Vice Chancellor for the institution without going through the due process.

According to him, people saying that do not understand how the University system operates.

“The Vice Chancellor of any university is nowhere near handpicking somebody to be a Vice Chancellor,” he said.

Speaking to the host of ’21 minutes with KKB’ Kwabena Kyenkyenhene Boateng, Professor Alabi explained that a search committee will advertise the position to Ghanaians for those who are qualified to apply.

“The search committee will conduct an interview and the report of the interview will be sent to the governing council. The Chairman of the governing council will deliberate on the report and appoint” he added.

To him, since the Vice Chancellor is nowhere near the appointment of a Vice Chancellor in any way, there is no way he can influence.

“They invited professors to come and interview and you say you are going to influence them, they will even tell people about it, in fact, some of them may even leave the job because they want to be very objective in what they want to do” he reiterated.

Professor Alabi, however, refused to rate the performance of his successor but was quick to add “I’m on leave now and I’m not really gone deep into what they are doing. I just want to relax for a while, I’m on leave.”

He stated that with the systems that he built at the UPSA, it will not be difficult for any leader after him to proceed because “the foundation was well laid so I don’t think any lead appointed by the governing council will perform below expectation.”

Professor Alabi will be contesting to lead the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as its flagbearer for the 2020 general elections. He is very confident that he will win to become the next president of Ghana.
