President Nana Akufo-Addo has questioned the level of patriotism of his political opponents who have largely criticized his government’s decision to approve the controversial agreement between Ghana and the United States of America.

The President who was addressing the nation on Thursday evening described how outraged he was by the defamatory comments from political opponents, some of whose patriotism he says can be so easily questioned.

According to him, he had stood with the people of Ghana all his adult life, fighting for the individual and collective rights of Ghanaians for which reason he will under no circumstance compromise or undermine the sovereignty of the country.

“Everything I have done, since assuming the great honour and privilege of serving you as President of the Republic, demonstrates that I remain focused on building a self-reliant, free, prosperous Ghana, which will be able to make her own unique contribution to the growth and development of Africa and the world.”

He said “I will never be the President that will compromise or sell the sovereignty of our country. I respect deeply the memory of the great patriots whose sacrifice and toil brought about our independence and freedom.”

The Akufo-Addo-led government has been accused by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of selling the country’s sovereignty to another country through the US military deal.

The accusations were backed by demonstrations led by Ghana First Patriots and some NDC party officials and parliamentarians.

But the President advised Ghanaians to concentrate and spend their energies on working together to achieve a goal which will make Ghana a happy and prosperous nation.

He also admonished Ghanaians to reject the hypocrisy of the naysayers who led the country into bankruptcy and the worse economic record of modern Ghanaian history.

“Let us rise above them, and build the Ghana of our destiny, the land of freedom, justice, progress and prosperity” he stressed.
