Hearts of Oak coach Henry Wellington says he was impressed with his charges performance following a 2-0 victory over Ebusua Dwarfs in the Ghana Premier League on Thursday.

The Phobians came into the game on the back of a defeat at home to Ashanti Gold and sitting in the danger zone with one point but goals from Patrick Razak and Joseph Esso gave the under-fire manager some breathing space at least until the next fixture.

“We are very happy with this result because it wasn’t easy to have gone two games without a win. In the first-half, I started [Christopher] Bonney as the left back but in the second-half I changed him because of the crosses that Fatau Mohammed can send [into the box] and that made the strategy work perfectly for me,” Wellington said.

“I’m a coach and it’s not only Hearts that I’ve coached. I’ve managed several clubs including Kotoko, Hasaacas and Dreams FC before coming here.

“There will obviously be criticisms because not everyone will like us but as a coach you have to be focused and do your work. Those criticising me didn’t give me the work. If those who gave me the work say I leave, I’ll go,” he added.

Midfielder Malik Akowuah was adjudged man of the match after struggling during his debut season.

“This is not the first time I’m receiving such an award but I think that I always struggle in my first season when I change club so the supporters will witness an improperly performance this season,” he said.

“In our first home game, we were not used to the Cape Coast Sports Stadium but since we’ve finally grabbed victory here, others will follow. We’re not affected by the exodus of players after the season because there have been equally good replacement,” the former Ashanti Gold star added.

Hearts have moved to seventh position on the log and will play Dreams FC on Sunday.
