Della Sowah, Member of Parliament for Kpando
The Member of Parliament for Kpando constituency in the Volta region, Mrs. Della Sowah has been honored for her astute role in promoting the country’s local textiles.
The award is also a result of the lawmaker’s contribution in promoting the country’s cultural heritage.
Receiving the award at the maiden edition of the Ghana Fashion Industry Honours and Awards night held in Accra to climax the ‘Wear Ghana Month’ campaign, Mrs. Sowah urged Ghanaians to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the country by incorporating it into their daily activities.
They were also advised to cherish and uphold traditional values and reflect in their way of life.
The MP for Kpando expressed concern about how some Ghanaians have turned to foreign cultures in basic things like language and food.
She said that some Ghanaian parents prefer to speak the English language to their children rather than their local languages. This, she noted is making the youth lose touch with their culture.
She therefore advised Ghanaians to jealously embrace their rich culture.
“Friends, we must stop the slave mentality and take pride in our culture”.
Mrs. Sowah also encouraged Ghanaians to patronise made in Ghana clothing in the month, adding that it will help promote the fashion industry and boost the Ghanaian economy.
“If Ghanaians could patronise the made in Ghana wear in the month of March to begin with the industry would boom and players would become economically successful and it will revolutionize the economy as well”.
She also advised fashion designers in the country to come out with outstanding initiatives, “whatever you design must be a masterpiece. Do it as if your very life depends on it. Don’t join those who accept mediocrity”.
She also encouraged them to be technology inclined.
“Use the internet, there is a lot you can learn from there. See what is trending and adapt it to our local dress style”.
In her address, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and MP for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, Catherine Abelema Afeku, called on the citizenry to be more patriotic by wearing Ghana.
The organizers of The “Wear Ghana Month,” Street Fashion Train Limited in collaboration with the National Commission on Culture (NCC), and The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) were optimistic of having very successful programs throughout the month of March.
The CEO of Street Fashion Train Benjamin Kojo-Milles, touching on the success of the “Wear Ghana Month” said the initiative has come to stay.
He added it will be observed annually to recognise individuals and companies for raising the flag of Ghana high locally and internationally.
