Kumawood movie producer and director, Samuel Nyamekye has disclosed that the emergence of Indian Telenovela ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ has pushed the Kumawood producers to work harder.
Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Mr Nyamekye revealed that the Telenovelas adopted by various media houses in the country has taught producers what Ghanaians crave for, with regard to movies.
According to the renowned producer, the most important element that the Kumawood industry needs to catch up with to be at par with international standards is the quality of their movies.
The producer, who doesn’t believe the Kumawood industry is dead, said all the Kumawood movie directors have been readied to produce movies with higher video standards to eradicate the series of foreign Telenovelas flooding television channels in the country.
Nonetheless, Mr Nyamekye pleaded with the government to support the movie industry financially to boost contents abroad.
He also urged various industry players to drop their ego and work hand-in-hand with producers to achieve a higher purpose in the entertainment industry.
“The Kumkum Bhagya opened our eyes to know what Ghanaians want… We need the money from government to compete with the Telenovelas. We don’t have a problem with the Telenovelas. We are trying to get the capital to improve our video qualities…”
“We are letting them know the quality is very important. We are making sure all the producers know… Now we are making them understand it’s not about the money. Now we are in for the TV series too. It won’t be a one day something but with time we would get the people”, he said.
Prince Tsegah, the host of ‘You Sey Wetin’ on the same Daybreak Hitz show lauded the producer for the innovative ideas to revive the Kumawood industry and not blaming Telenovelas for killing their jobs.
“They know how to ply their trade. He is a visionary leader. He is a smart guy and the way he is thinking clearly shows that if we have more people like him, we can do more to attract the mileage. Success will be ours. Blaming Kumkum Bhagya is an excuse and that will not fly…” Prince maintained.
