Rawlings Amidu MFormer President Jerry John Rawlings and Martin Amidu, Special Prosecutor

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has criticised the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the neglect of former Attorney General Martin Amidu.

Mr Rawlings believes the neglect of Mr Amidu by recent NDC governments was detrimental. He was not enthused that the skills of Mr Amidu could not be harnessed by the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is now utilising the expertise of the Citizen Vigilante to fight corruption.

“Now, they have appointed hard iron hands like Martin Amidu to be in charge of fighting corruption from that office [of Special Prosecutor] and some NDC people are angry. Their counterparts in NPP and other places are equally angry. What should that tell you?…the evidence is there for everybody to see why we lost…Martin Amidu should have been used by us (NDC) but no…[we didn’t] when he is an embodiment of what we stand for.

Mr Amidu took the oath of office to begin work at an event held at the Flagstaff House on Friday, 23 February.

Mr Amidu will also see to the establishment of structures and systems for a sustainable and effective running of the Office of the Special Prosecutor which was introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in fulfillment of their campaign promise to tackle corruption in Ghana.

The Appointments Committee of Parliament approved the nomination of Mr Amidu as Special Prosecutor.

Mr Amidu was nominated by Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo and his nomination was accepted by President Akufo-Addo.

The former Attorney General was on Tuesday, 13 February 2018, vetted by the Appointments Committee of parliament.

Mr Amidu during his vetting said he took up the appointment to help fight corruption. He promised not to be bias but to be fair and neutral in the discharge of his duties.
