Sports Minister Hon. Isaac Asiamah says his predecessor Nii Lantey Vanderpuije left the ministry in debt of GHC51m.

He said the Ministry was broke when he assumed office last year, citing misappropriation of funds and poor management by the previous administration.

“I am sorry to report to you that we met a negative balance of GHC51m, that is the debt we inherited. There was nothing at the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” Asiamah made this known at his first encounter with the press on Tuesday.

He added that his outfit saw the negative balance as a challenge and had to devise ways of reviving the Ministry than complaining.

Asiamah, however, did not mention if the amount owed has been cleared but insisted that funds are now not misappropriated.

“We are making sure that now there is that transparency in the way we manage our resources. That is why when I came and I saw the fat amount of money being spent on hotel accommodation for coaches I was upset and ensured there is a now permanent residence for the coach,” He said.

Asiamah also claimed that he will soon start the sod-cutting for the construction of some multipurpose youth resource centers across the 10 regions of Ghana.

The centers which will be constructed in partnership with the Ministry for Inner-city and Zongo Development is to among other things create a venue for upcoming sports enthusiasts to acquire training and grooming.
