The Police Administration is expected to tighten security at the various stations across the country after several jailbreaks, leading to the death of some personnel.

Police Public Affairs Director-General, ACP David Eklu said the exercise will see all the police stations fitted with modern security gadgets to make it difficult for armed groups to stage attacks.

The announcement comes six days after the Kwabenya District Police Headquarters in Accra was attacked by some heavily armed men Sunday, leading to the death of a police officer and the escape of at least seven in mates.

The officer on duty was shot dead by the attackers.

There have been seven jailbreaks within the last five years, with at least 15 hardened criminals escaping. But some were re-arrested, police officials have said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Appeatu has revealed at least nine people have been arrested in connection with the murder of two police officers at Kwabenya and Lapaz within the last seven months.

Four of the suspects apprehended are believed to be responsible for the killing of Inspector Emmanuel Ashilevi at Kwabenya. The police administration has placed a GHS15,000 bounty on the Kwabenya case in order for them to be able to arrest the remaining five fugitives.

In order to insulate the various police stations against attacks, ACP David Eklu has said the facilities will be supplied with modern security tools and equipment.

“There are always lessons learnt out of bitter experience,” he told Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s Top Story Thursday, adding that is the best way to defend the men and women in uniform.

The arrest made by the police has drawn plaudits from some security experts.

Security lecturer at the Kofi Annan International Peace-Keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Dr Kwesi Aning has expressed satisfaction with the work of the police after the Kwabenya attack.

“They are doing well but they need to do much more,” he said, adding the police need to consistently assure the public that it is safe.
