Government has expressed its fullest commitment towards revamping the country’s railway system to ensure maximum safety of commuters.

According to the Deputy Minister of Railways Development, Kwaku Agyenim Boateng, government will begin by retraining all workers of the company to ensure modern operational standards.

This was in response to a question by Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza, on steps being taken by the ministry to ensure safety on the country’s rail network.

Mr Boateng added that government had taken steps to reconstruct the rail lines in the country to meet safety standards.

He said: “To ensure passenger comfort and safety, over 50 truck workers have been hired by the Ghana Railway Company Limited for the rehabilitation of the Accra-Nsawam intersection of the line.

“Ghana Railway Company Limited is also in the process of procuring balance and treated wooden sleepers to be used in the rehabilitation works to bring the line back to good operating standards.

“Similarly on the Western lines, Ghana Railway Company Limited has intensified ongoing rehabilitation work from Nsuta to Tarkwa. It is anticipated that the ongoing rehabilitation work would be completed by the first quarter of 2018.

“The Ghana Railway Development Authority in collaboration with the Ghana Railway Company Limited are in the process of installing an additional level crossing mechanisms at major railroad intersections to improve pedestrian and vehicular safety.”
