MCE CARS IMPOUNDEDThe vehicles impounded by National Security

Ketu South MCE says smugglers forced their way into his residence despite attempts by his security to stop them and hid two luxurious Mercedes Benz vehicles without custom documents.

This he explained, got him furious so he called the Aflao sector of the Custom Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and reported the matter following which the vehicles were impounded.

“That was the reason why I had to call the security concerned to come and impound the vehicles,” Mr. Agbenorwu told Bernice Abu Baidoo on JoyNews TV midday news, Tuesday.

The luxury Mercedes Benz vehicles, with the street value of $3.2 million, were reportedly smuggled into the country through unapproved routes at Ghana’s southern town Aflao in the Volta Region.

They were subsequently dumped at the official residence of the MCE in preparation to be towed to Accra before they were accosted by GRA officials led by Aflao Sector Commander, Frank Ashong on the night of January 10, 2018.

The two vehicles; Mercedes Benz 300 SL, (white colour) which costs about $1.8 million and Mercedes Benz 190 SL, black [$1.4 million], did not have the required documentation covering their importation into the country.

The notice of seizure sighted by Myjoyonline.com noted the coupe convertibles were smuggled into the country in contravention of Section 121 of the Customs Act 2015, (Act 891).

Estimated duty to be paid on the vehicles is in excess of GH?900,000, according to a source.

But the MCE, who does not reside in the premises because it is under renovation, denies involvement in the importation of the vehicles.

He also does not suspect anybody. “I don’t know anybody who may be doing that,” indicated.

Earlier, the Aflao Sector Commander of the GRA, Frank Ashong who spoke on the Midday News on Joy FM Tuesday, said they are yet to identify the owner of the luxury vehicles.

However, Myjoyonline.com has learnt that investigations conducted by National Security operatives have pointed to a prominent businessman (name withheld), said to be the owner of the uncustomed cars.
