The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has unveiled its activities for 2018 focusing largely on anti-corruption, environmental governance and civic education.
Ranging from public advocacy to training workshops, the Commission’s mixed activities are targeted at conscientising Ghanaians against acts that are injurious to the country.
Addressing a news conference in Accra Friday, NCCE boss Josephine Nkrumah said the Commission will intensify its public engagement campaigns on anti-corruption this year.
“We cannot afford to back-paddle because the cost will be too high for us,” she cautioned, adding the NCCE’s flagship programme, the Anti-Corruption, Rule of Law and Accountability Programme (ARAP) will be rolled out on a large scale.
The 2018 activities are anchored on the theme: “Our nation, our heritage, consolidating Ghana’s democratic gains.”
This year marks the 25th-Anniversary of the NCCE since it was established in 1993 under the National Commission for Civic Education Act (Act 452).
The law empowers it among other things to create and sustain within the society the awareness of the principles and objectives of the Constitution as the fundamental law of the people of Ghana.
The Commission is also charged with the responsibility of formulating for the consideration of the government, programmes at the national, regional and district levels aimed at realizing the objectives of the Constitution.
But the journey has not been all glossy, a development the Commission has attributed to the lack of both adequate funds and logistics.
Marking her first year at the helm of affairs, Ms Nkrumah has issued a clarion call to the workers to join in the effort of repositioning the Commission to do more.
“We [must be prepared to] shape stronger institution relevant to our national development [and] we must constantly re-engineer our delivery,” she said, announcing in-house training sessions for all officers.
The NCCE boss expressed optimism the Commission will surmount its challenges and make an “even greater impact on the people of Ghana.”
“[But] civic education is a shared responsibility,” Ms Nkrumah said, extending a hand of friendship to the media and all Ghanaians to join the Commission in its activities.
