The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has warned people residing within the Accra metropolis, who engage in open defecation to desist from the act.

Addressing the media at the launch of the 1 house, 1 toilet project in the Ablekuma Central Constituency, Mr. Sowah said AMA’s public health inspectors will ‘crack the whip very hard’ to ensure that sanitation offenders obey rules.

He is optimistic the implementation of the 1 house, 1 toilet project would help minimize open defecation in the constituency since most households will be supplied with toilet facilities, hence, those who claim to be defecating in the open as a result of the inconvenience associated with public toilets have no excuse.

He believes that though the AMA has initiated the 1 house, 1 toilet project to assist residents in getting toilet facilities for their homes, there would still be recalcitrant citizens who would want to go contrary to his directives.

“We have provided you with the necessary support facilities to ease your burden. The next time, when I am around, you can be assured that my public health inspectors, who are the Samansaman people, are going to crack the whip for you to comply,” he stressed.

The Accra Mayor also challenged residents in the Town Council community to provide toilet facilities for themselves, since it is not the responsibility of the Assembly Member, the MP or the AMA.

“It lies on you as a household to provide a toilet facility for yourself. It is not the responsibility of the assembly member neither the responsibility of the Member of Parliament or the Accra Metropolitan Assembly,” he asserted.

Zoomlion had earlier this year urged government to crack the whip on sanitation offenders.

Communication Manager of the Waste Management Company, Robert Coleman, said that the persecution of sanitation offenders would deter people from littering the environment indiscriminately.
