The minority in Parliament say they will raise the issue of the continuous stay of the 2 ex-Gitmo detainees in the country before the house when it resumes sitting this year.

Mr. Samson Ahi, opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)Member of Parliament (MP) for Bodi Constituency told Nhyira FM in Kumasi this Wednesday.

The two-year period for the stay for the Gitmo two expired on the 6th January 2018.

Mahmud Umar Muhammed Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammed Salih Al-Dhuby were allowed to stay in Ghana based on the fact from the then NDC government they posed no threat to the country.

The two are all nationals of Yemen were transferred from the Guantanamo Bay Prison in Cuba by the United States in its bid to close down the place over concerns of human rights violations.

The two detainees have since exhausted their two-year stay in Ghana which was the original plan.

But Mr Ahi questioned why religious leaders who rose against their presence in Ghana are quiet even when the period they were expected to stay in the country had elapsed.

“We all know how some people including men of God chastised former President Mahama for accepting them. Due to that we were thought the NPP was going to send them away immediately, however they are still in the country”. Mr. Ahi said

“So comparing Mahama’s decision and the current government, what is the difference? If what president Mahama did was wrong and they are still here then what has changed” He asked.

“Now they are living here illegally. We shall take the matter seriously on the floor of the house after we have resumed”, adding that the minority is yet to meet to take a position.
