Mohammed-Nurudeen<\/p>\n<p>2017-12-23<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/63150655.295.jpg\" alt=\"Fao Tubers 1\" title=\"Fao Tubers 1\" width=\"295\" height=\"166\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>Target countries are Benin, Cameroon, Cote d\u2019Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda and Uganda.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"noPrint\">\n<div id=\"537626303\" style=\"width:300;height:250;margin:0;padding:0\">\n<p>\t\t  <noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" name=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/afr?auid=537626303&amp;cb=151125813973067\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"><a href=\"\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/rc?cs=b2ad7fa7fd&amp;cb=151125813973067\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1514029996_578_ai\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\">The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is seeking to strengthen links between small-scale players in root and tuber sector in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Recommendations are being considered for policy formulation aimed at improving livelihoods of farmers and actors in the value chain.<\/p>\n<p>Target countries are Benin, Cameroon, Cote d\u2019Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda and Uganda. <\/p>\n<p>Participants have been discussing access to good planting material, opportunities, constraints and business perspectives, among others on a theme: experience sharing on cassava production and protection.<\/p>\n<p>Food and Agriculture Organization\u2019s Regional Project Co-ordinator, Moussa Djagoudi, said it the program is the best way to strengthen linkages between small actors and buyers in the root and tuber industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More than 70% of our actors are small scale farmers and making impact on them can improve our food security situations in Africa\u201d He explained.<\/p>\n<p>Roots and tubers constitute one of the most important crops in Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Regions.<\/p>\n<p>Commercializing the crops for poverty reduction requires stronger linkages between small-holder and formal as well as semi formal markets.  <\/p>\n<p>Cassava, yam and potato are major crops of sustenance. They account for 20 percent of calories consumed in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>They are not only important for food security but they are increasingly providing jobs, and giving income, particularly, for women and the youth.<\/p>\n<p>Regional experience sharing workshop on cassava production and protection affords experts to compare notes on lessons from their respective countries.<\/p>\n<p>Specific objectives include discussion on interventions and regulatory framework. Others include access to climatic risk management, access to information services and finance.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson Kwaku is at Ghana\u2019s Ministry of Food and Agriculture. He finds the meeting a platform to initiate efforts to increase productivity per unit area and diversify value addition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe small scale farmers are being challenged with two major things; one is about increasing the productivity per unit and to diversify in terms of value addition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Malawi, cassava is the second staple behind maize, Raw material supply is however a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Jaffu works closely with University of Malawi. He says discussion on seed standard at the workshop is a boost for his country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have seed standard and I think it is very critical.
