#Uhuru Kenyatta has been sworn in for a second term as president of Kenya at a ceremony in the capital, Nairobi, boycotted by the opposition.<\/p>\n
The ceremony took place in a packed stadium with police driving back other Kenyatta supporters trying to get in without seats.<\/p>\n
Riot police were also deployed in another part of the city to stop a rally by opposition supporters.<\/p>\n
Opposition leader Raila Odinga mocked Mr Kenyatta\u2019s \u201ccoronation\u201d.<\/p>\n
He boycotted the re-run of the presidential poll last month and says Mr Kenyatta was not elected legitimately.<\/p>\n
Mr Kenyatta was officially re-elected with 98% of the vote on 26 October but just under 39% of voters turned out.<\/p>\n
The original election on 8 August was held over again after being annulled by the Supreme Court on grounds of irregularities.<\/p>\n
What is the mood at the stadium?<\/h2>\n
There were scenes of chaos outside Nairobi\u2019s Kasarani sports stadium when people without seats tried to rush in and were driven back by police with tear gas, and on horseback.<\/p>\n
Big screens had been promised so that tens of thousands of people could watch the ceremony from outside the stadium but no screens were provided, AFP news agency reports.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just want to see President Uhuru Kenyatta because I voted for him,\u201d Janet Wambua, who was among the angry crowd, told agency. \u201cWhy are we being beaten?\u201d<\/p>\n
Inside the stadium itself, foreign dignitaries took up their seats in a calm, good-humoured atmosphere.<\/p>\n
Spectators were treated to musical performances and a military parade.<\/p>\n
Eunice Jerobon, a trader who travelled overnight from the Rift Valley town of Kapsabet for the inauguration, told Reuters news agency of his hopes under the re-elected president.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sure Uhuru will be able to bring people together and unite them so we can all work for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Which foreign leaders are attending?<\/h2>\n
Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Rwandan President Paul Kagame are among a number of African leaders attending.<\/p>\n
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also expected in Nairobi but for an event later in the presidential palace, the Jerusalem Post reports. <\/p>\n
Why was the election re-run?<\/h2>\n
Chief Justice David Maraga said the August election had not been \u201cconducted in accordance with the constitution\u201d and declared it \u201cinvalid, null and void\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court ruled that the result had been \u201cneither transparent nor verifiable\u201d.<\/p>\n
But Mr Odinga urged his supporters to boycott the second vote because he said no reforms had been made to the electoral commission since the original poll.<\/p>\n
Correspondents say the election dispute has left Kenya deeply divided.<\/p>\n
About 50 people are reported to have been killed in violence since the August ballot.<\/p>\n
How are the opposition responding?<\/h2>\n
Mr Odinga had promised to hold a \u201cmemorial rally\u201d in another part of Nairobi to honour those killed during the four months of political upheaval since the August vote.<\/p>\n
But when a crowd gathered at the Jacaranda grounds, riot police fired tear gas and beat marchers, the Daily Nation reports. <\/p>\n
According to the opposition leader, Mr Kenyatta was elected by \u201cjust a small section of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the opposition stronghold of Kisumu, in the west of the country, local people told BBC News they were not happy with the inauguration.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am going to peacefully accept and move on but I won\u2019t recognise this presidency,\u201d said one man.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t even think I\u2019d ever go to any government office to seek for services because I know it\u2019s a government that has come to office by force, it has killed people to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n
A woman said Mr Kenyatta had not won fairly.<\/p>\n
\u201cA large part of the country did not vote \u2013 Kisumu being a major part that did not vote \u2013 and so we feel that it\u2019s not time to move on,\u201d she said. \u201cIt will not be an easy thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
