{"id":430810,"date":"2017-10-21T07:49:03","date_gmt":"2017-10-21T07:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/10\/21\/spain-expected-to-remove-catalan-powers\/"},"modified":"2017-10-21T07:49:03","modified_gmt":"2017-10-21T07:49:03","slug":"spain-expected-to-remove-catalan-powers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/10\/21\/spain-expected-to-remove-catalan-powers\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain expected to remove Catalan powers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Spanish cabinet is expected to approve measures allowing the government to impose direct rule over Catalonia.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy meets with his cabinet almost three weeks after the region held a referendum.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish government says the vote was illegal, but Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont says he has been given a mandate to declare independence.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the central government is preparing to take back power.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected to trigger Article 155 of the constitution, which allows it to impose direct rule in a crisis, taking back a region\u2019s devolved powers, for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Other moves may include taking control of Catalonia\u2019s regional police force.<\/p>\n<p>However, Article 155 does not give the government the power to fully suspend autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>The country has been in crisis since the vote was held on 1 October.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 43% of Catalans who reportedly voted, 90% were in favour of independence.
