{"id":429953,"date":"2017-10-18T18:04:25","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T18:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/10\/18\/trumps-latest-travel-ban-blocked\/"},"modified":"2017-10-18T18:04:25","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T18:04:25","slug":"trumps-latest-travel-ban-blocked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/10\/18\/trumps-latest-travel-ban-blocked\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s latest travel ban blocked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">US President Donald Trump\u2019s latest attempt to bar citizens of eight countries from entering the US has suffered a second federal court defeat.<\/p>\n<p>Judges in Hawaii and Maryland issued separate temporary restraining orders on the open-ended travel ban.<\/p>\n<p>Both judges cited Mr Trump\u2019s campaign description of it as a \u201cMuslim ban\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The policy targets travellers from Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad and North Korea, as well as some Venezuelan officials.<\/p>\n<p>Two previous iterations of the ban targeted six Muslim-majority countries, and were widely referred to by Trump officials as a \u201cMuslim ban\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday \u2013 the day the measure was meant to take effect, a coalition of Muslim and civil rights groups plan to march from the White House to the Trump Hotel and then on to the headquarters of Customs and Border Patrol agency.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump\u2019s Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, told a group of senators that the president\u2019s \u201corder is lawful, necessary, and we are proud to defend it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are confident that we will ultimately prevail,\u201d he testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n<p>In Maryland, Judge Theodore Chuang\u2019s ruling early on Wednesday said the latest version of the ban \u201cgenerally resembles President Trump\u2019s earlier description of the Muslim ban\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018initial\u2019 announcement of the Muslim ban, offered repeatedly and explicitly through President Trump\u2019s own statements, forcefully and persuasively expressed his purpose in unequivocal terms,\u201d Judge Chuang wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Maryland decision came after a judge in Hawaii ruled that the revised policy was fulfilling Mr Trump\u2019s campaign promise for \u201ca total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States\u201d, despite the addition of North Korea and Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>US District Judge Derrick Watson, who blocked Mr Trump\u2019s last travel ban in March, issued the Tuesday\u2019s restraining order on the grounds that the president did not have the powers under federal immigration law to impose such restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s controversial travel bans have each been frustrated by the courts to some degree:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In January, the president signed an order banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries and suspending all refugee entry. The measure prompted protests and legal challenges across dozens of states<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A revised version exempted green card holders and dual citizens.
