{"id":427559,"date":"2017-10-11T09:58:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T09:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/10\/11\/madrid-scorns-catalan-leaders-independence-statement\/"},"modified":"2017-10-11T09:58:39","modified_gmt":"2017-10-11T09:58:39","slug":"madrid-scorns-catalan-leaders-independence-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/10\/11\/madrid-scorns-catalan-leaders-independence-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"Madrid scorns Catalan leader\u2019s independence statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Spanish government has rejected a statement of independence signed by Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and dismissed calls for mediation.<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s deputy prime minister described Mr Puigdemont as someone \u201cwho does not know where he is, where he\u2019s going\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is due to hold an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the government\u2019s next steps.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Puigdemont signed a declaration of independence on Tuesday, but halted implementation to allow negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>There had been speculation that the Catalan president might declare independence and put the move into effect, plunging Spain into an even deeper political crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Spain has been in turmoil since a disputed referendum on 1 October which was declared invalid by the country\u2019s Constitutional Court.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the Catalan parliament in Barcelona, Mr Puigdemont said the autonomous region had won the right to be independent as a result of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call on international states and organisations to recognise the Catalan republic as an independent and sovereign state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the \u201cpeople\u2019s will\u201d was to break away from Madrid, but he also said he wanted to \u201cde-escalate\u201d the tension around the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI propose suspending the effects of the declaration of independence to undertake talks in the coming weeks without which it is not possible to reach an agreed solution,\u201d Mr Puigdemont told MPs.<\/p>\n<p>He and other Catalan leaders then signed the declaration of independence.
