{"id":424362,"date":"2017-10-02T15:08:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-02T15:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/10\/02\/small-scale-miners-question-govts-mining-ban-extension\/"},"modified":"2017-10-02T15:08:37","modified_gmt":"2017-10-02T15:08:37","slug":"small-scale-miners-question-govts-mining-ban-extension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/10\/02\/small-scale-miners-question-govts-mining-ban-extension\/","title":{"rendered":"Small-scale miners question gov&#8217;t&#8217;s mining ban extension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Small-scale miners are unhappy with government\u2019s decision to extend the ban on small-scale mining in the country, describing it as unfair.<\/p>\n<p>The miners said their lives have been negatively impacted following the decision to stop their mining activities in February.<\/p>\n<p>The ban was imposed in March this year when the government launched the fight to end illegal small-scale mining also known as galamsey.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1002554\/Myjoyonline.com_InArticle_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>Despite the deployment of a joint Military and Police anti-galamsey taskforce, Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu says not much has been achieved.<\/p>\n<p>He announced the extension when he addressed the media after a tour of some mining areas in the Amenfi East District of the Western Region.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after assuming power, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) declared a ban on small-scale mining as part of efforts to fight the activities of illegal mining popularly called galamsey.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3905303705587_6948909219457.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; height:375px; width:500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Mr<\/b><b> Amewu granting interview to journalist after visit to galamsey site<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Galamsey has fouled the environment, polluted rivers and destroyed many farmlands.<\/p>\n<p>The government hoped by the institution of a three-month ban and a constitution of an anti-galamsey taskforce, the activities of illegal mining will be reduced drastically.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Minister said, \u201cthere is going to be an extension because we have not achieved what we were looking for. We have put in modalities and during the extension, a lot will be done in regularizing the whole system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to him, regarding existing small-scale licenses pronouncement will be made to weed out the recognized entities from the unrecognized ones so they can re-register.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the small-scale licenses, 68-70 percent were issued in December close to the election period and we cannot accept things done in a haphazard manner without due cause to the procedure,\u201d Mr Amewu said.<\/p>\n<p>Licensed small-scale miners are, however, unhappy with this announcement by the government.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6252638067843_3966723755933.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; height:281px; width:500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Some soldiers who were with the Minister during his visit<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Nuhu Muhammed Mustapha who is the Secretary of the Prestea Huni Valley Small-scale Miners Association\u00a0argues that government should regularize the operations of illegal miners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not fair; the Minister must come again. At least let\u2019s allow those who have licenses to work.
