{"id":421650,"date":"2017-09-24T07:22:02","date_gmt":"2017-09-24T07:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/09\/24\/merkel-seeks-fourth-term\/"},"modified":"2017-09-24T07:22:02","modified_gmt":"2017-09-24T07:22:02","slug":"merkel-seeks-fourth-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/09\/24\/merkel-seeks-fourth-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkel seeks fourth term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Germans head to the polls today for the country\u2019s federal elections, in a key test for Angela Merkel.<\/p>\n<p>She is seeking a fourth term as chancellor, and to retain her Christian Democrat party\u2019s (CDU) status as the largest presence in Germany\u2019s Bundestag.<\/p>\n<p>The CDU\u2019s coalition partner, the SPD, is its main opponent in the election.<\/p>\n<p>Polling stations will be open from 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT) until 18:00.<\/p>\n<p>The first exit polls are expected shortly after the close of voting.<\/p>\n<p>The election is seen as important because it may result in six parties in the Bundestag \u2013 the German national parliament \u2013 for the first time since World War Two.<\/p>\n<p>Such a result could mean a change in the makeup of the current governing coalition.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">The top contenders<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Angela Merkel:<\/strong> Widely expected to retain her seat, Mrs Merkel is seen internationally as a source of stability \u2013 having led Germany since 2005. Her decision to open Germany to asylum seekers during the peak of Europe\u2019s migrant crisis cost her politically, but she appears to have recovered<\/p>\n<p><strong>Martin Schulz:<\/strong> Leader of the centre-left SPD and Mrs Merkel\u2019s main rival, he is also her coalition partner \u2013 which has proved troublesome during the campaign, as he sought to criticise her politics<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alice Weidel and Alexander Gauland:<\/strong> The top candidates for the right-wing AfD. Achieving seats in the Bundestag \u2013 or potentially becoming the third-largest party, as some campaign polls suggested \u2013 would be a major victory.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Schulz, leader of the Social Democrats (SPD) and a former president of the European parliament, is Mrs Merkel\u2019s biggest rival for chancellor.<\/p>\n<p>But Mrs Merkel, with 12 years of experience in the office, is widely expected to retain her position.<\/p>\n<p>Among the parties expected to win seats is the right-wing nationalist, anti-Islam Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.<\/p>\n<p>The party has so far held seats only in regional government, but has grown in popularity during a campaign focused on immigration issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a style=\"display:none\" rel=\"follow\" href=\"http:\/\/megatheme.ir\/\" title=\"\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633\">\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Germans head to the polls today for the country\u2019s federal elections, in a key test for Angela Merkel.
