{"id":420798,"date":"2017-09-21T16:36:50","date_gmt":"2017-09-21T16:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/09\/21\/reform-un-security-council-akufo-addo\/"},"modified":"2017-09-21T16:36:50","modified_gmt":"2017-09-21T16:36:50","slug":"reform-un-security-council-akufo-addo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/09\/21\/reform-un-security-council-akufo-addo\/","title":{"rendered":"Reform UN Security Council \u2013 Akufo-Addo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Ghana\u2019s president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has joined other world leaders to champion a reformation of the United Nations, especially the composition of the Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>The Security Council is the United Nations\u2019 most powerful body, with \u201cprimary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.\u201d It is composed of 15 Members: five permanent members \u2013 China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the 62nd UN General Assembly in New York Thursday, President Akufo-Addo contended that the composition of the Council is unfair, especially to Africa hence the urgent need to reconstitute it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time for reformation has come,\u201d Nana Akufo-Addo emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>Several African countries have also made similar calls, arguing a world body seeking the interest of everyone must have a fair representation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an urgent need to reform this organisation. Ghana supports the process of UN reform, especially the Security Council.
