{"id":420031,"date":"2017-09-19T16:00:10","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T16:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/09\/19\/another-tanzanian-newspaper-banned\/"},"modified":"2017-09-19T16:00:10","modified_gmt":"2017-09-19T16:00:10","slug":"another-tanzanian-newspaper-banned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/09\/19\/another-tanzanian-newspaper-banned\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Tanzanian newspaper banned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"post-266302\">\n<div class=\"post-header post-tp-1-header\">\n<div class=\"single-featured\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tanz-paper-480x430.jpg\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix single-post-content\">\n<p>The Tanzanian government has banned privately-owned Mwanahalisi newspaper from publication for two years, for \u201cpublishing false information that could jeopardize the security of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The government says the newspaper had violated previous warnings about articles concerning President John Magufuli.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the government points to five stories it found objectionable.<\/p>\n<p>One article quotes Information Minister Harrison Mwakyembe as saying his life is in danger, which according to the government is not true.<\/p>\n<p>The government statement adds that the newspaper failed to retract the story when asked to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Another story it objected to was an opinion piece asking whether Tanzanians should pray for President Magufuli or opposition MP Tundu Lissu, who survived being shot at two weeks ago, and is now receiving treatment at a hospital in neighbouring Kenya:<\/p>\n<div class=\"lx-stream-post__body gel-body-copy\" data-reactid=\".1pe15vgn75s.4.0.0.1.0.0.0.2.0.0.$k59c0f473e4b054faf9990ab7.3\">\n<div class=\"lx-rta \" data-reactid=\".1pe15vgn75s.4.0.0.1.0.0.0.2.0.0.$k59c0f473e4b054faf9990ab7.3.0\">\n<div class=\"lx-stream-post-body\" data-reactid=\".1pe15vgn75s.4.0.0.1.0.0.0.2.0.0.$k59c0f473e4b054faf9990ab7.3.0.0\">\n<p>Mwanahalisi, which was set up in 1995, is the second newspaper to be banned in Tanzania in the past 12 months.
