{"id":412459,"date":"2017-08-23T10:12:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T10:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/08\/23\/angolans-choose-new-leader-to-replace-jose-eduardo-dos-santos\/"},"modified":"2017-08-23T10:12:02","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T10:12:02","slug":"angolans-choose-new-leader-to-replace-jose-eduardo-dos-santos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/08\/23\/angolans-choose-new-leader-to-replace-jose-eduardo-dos-santos\/","title":{"rendered":"Angolans choose new leader to replace Jose Eduardo dos Santos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\">&#13;<br \/>\n                <\/aside>\n<p><!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 3.4.4--><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Angolans are heading to the polls to vote for a replacement for their veteran leader.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Eduardo dos Santos has been in power in the oil-rich country since 1979, making him the world\u2019s second-longest serving president.<\/p>\n<p>He is not standing in this election \u2013 Defence Minister Joao Lourenco is standing for the governing MPLA party.<\/p>\n<p>His main challenger is expected to be Isias Samakuva, from the MPLA\u2019s civil war rival, Unita.<\/p>\n<p>Under Angola\u2019s voting system, people are choosing both the candidate and party in one vote.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts says the MPLA, which has been in power since independence in 1975, is likely to win.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC\u2019s Mayeni Jones in the capital Luanda says the young have very different priorities to their elders as they head to the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p>The emphasis previously has been on stability because Angola went through a 27-year civil war which only ended in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>But young people have been telling the BBC that they want one thing \u2013 jobs. They blame what they refer to as simply \u201cthe crisis\u201d for losing their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Angola was one of the fastest-growing economies in the world because of its huge oil reserves.<\/p>\n<p>But when global oil prices dropped two years ago, it affected the whole economy.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the majority of the population are below 35, this demographic has a lot of voting power and its demands could be key, our correspondent says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to promise jobs, you need to promise housing, you need to promise study for their children,\u201d says political analyst Dalvan Costa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they will decide the outcome of the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a style=\"display:none\" rel=\"follow\" href=\"http:\/\/megatheme.ir\/\" title=\"\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633\">\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#13; Angolans are heading to the polls to vote for a replacement for their veteran leader.
