{"id":411774,"date":"2017-08-15T10:08:12","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T10:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/08\/15\/n-korea-leader-briefed-on-guam-plan-but-opts-to-wait\/"},"modified":"2017-08-15T10:08:12","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T10:08:12","slug":"n-korea-leader-briefed-on-guam-plan-but-opts-to-wait","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/08\/15\/n-korea-leader-briefed-on-guam-plan-but-opts-to-wait\/","title":{"rendered":"N Korea leader \u2018briefed\u2019 on Guam plan but opts to wait"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\">&#13;<br \/>\n                <\/aside>\n<p><!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 3.4.4--><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reviewed plans to fire missiles towards the US Pacific territory of Guam but will hold off, state media said.<\/p>\n<p>Although prepared for \u201cthe enveloping fire at Guam\u201d, the North said it would watch what \u201cthe foolish Yankees\u201d do before taking a decision.<\/p>\n<p>Last week\u2019s threat against Guam escalated the sharp rhetoric being exchanged between the two sides.<\/p>\n<p>This latest report points to a pause in the increasingly bitter war of words.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s President Moon Jae-in meanwhile has urged the US not to launch an attack on the Korean peninsula without its consent, saying \u201cno one may decide to take military action without the consent\u201d of the South.<\/p>\n<p>The report on state news agency KCNA said Kim Jong-un \u201cexamined the plan for a long time\u201d and discussed it with senior military officials.<\/p>\n<p>The commander of North Korea\u2019s strategic force was now merely waiting for orders \u201cafter rounding off the preparations for the enveloping fire at Guam\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But, crucially, the report also said that Mr Kim would watch the US before making any decision, signalling an apparent deceleration in the provocative rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>Correspondents say that after days of menacing threats it might seem that Kim Jong-un could be in the mood to finally hit the pause button \u2013 but in a nation as secretive as North Korea, one can never be sure.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say it could simply mean Pyongyang is not fully ready to launch an attack on Guam, so it could just be buying more time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What are North Korea\u2019s neighbours saying?<\/h2>\n<p>South Korea and China \u2013 North Korea\u2019s closest ally \u2013 have been urging calm and a renewed push for diplomatic resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the US should not act unilaterally.
