{"id":411087,"date":"2017-08-10T15:58:26","date_gmt":"2017-08-10T15:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/08\/10\/au-and-commonwealth-say-poll-credible\/"},"modified":"2017-08-10T15:58:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T15:58:26","slug":"au-and-commonwealth-say-poll-credible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/08\/10\/au-and-commonwealth-say-poll-credible\/","title":{"rendered":"AU and Commonwealth say poll credible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\">&#13;<br \/>\n                <\/aside>\n<p><!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 3.4.4--><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Foreign observers have expressed confidence in Kenya\u2019s electoral process, despite opposition leader Raila Odinga\u2019s claim of massive fraud.<\/p>\n<p>African observers described Tuesday\u2019s poll as credible, while former US Secretary of State John Kerry said its integrity remained intact.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union said candidates should accept losing as \u201cnatural\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Odinga alleges that results of the presidential poll have been rigged to give incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta victory.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, he said that the IT system of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had been hacked, and Kenya was witnessing the worst \u201cvoter theft\u201d in its history.<\/p>\n<p>The IEBC said there had been an attempt to hack its system, but it had failed.<\/p>\n<p>Heading the Carter Center\u2019s observer team, Mr Kerry urged all sides to wait for the final results, and for the loser to accept defeat.<\/p>\n<p>He said there were \u201cminor variances here and there\u201d, but none that had so far made him doubt the poll\u2019s integrity.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cbottom-line\u201d was that the IEBC had in place a \u201ctransparent process of voting, counting, reporting and securing the vote\u201d, Mr Kerry added at a press conference in Kenya\u2019s capital, Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p>Commonwealth observer mission head and Ghana\u2019s ex-President John Mahama said there was no reason to doubt the IEBC\u2019s ability to deliver a \u201ccredible election\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that the election has been conducted in a transparent and credible manner and that Kenyans must be commended for that election,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Expressing a similar view, African Union observer mission head and South Africa\u2019s ex-President Thabo Mbeki said he was satisfied with the way the electoral commission had conducted itself.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition\u2019s hacking allegations should be looked into by the IEBC, he added.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the European Union observer mission said the opposition had made \u201cserious allegations\u201d and it was up to the IECB to complete the \u201cremaining steps with maximum transparency and adherence to the law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandidates and their supporters must accept that not winning is a natural part of a democratic competition,\u201d EU observer mission head Marietje Schaake said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny irregularities or challenges to the process and outcomes should be addressed through petitions and the courts,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The IECB said it hoped to release final results from the presidential poll on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Raw polling data published on its website says that with almost all of results in, Mr Kenyatta \u2013 who is seeking a second term \u2013 is leading with about 54.3%, to Mr Odinga\u2019s 44.8% share of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>These suggest Mr Kenyatta is heading for a first-round victory.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Odinga\u2019s claim of rigging led to sporadic outbreaks of violence on Wednesday, but police denied reports that two people had been killed in election-related unrest.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a style=\"display:none\" rel=\"follow\" href=\"http:\/\/megatheme.ir\/\" title=\"\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633\">\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#13; Foreign observers have expressed confidence in Kenya\u2019s electoral process, despite opposition leader Raila Odinga\u2019s claim of massive fraud.
