Queues formed early and some minor stampedes were reported.<\/p>\n<p>The contest pits Mr Kenyatta against his long-time rival, Raila Odinga, and is seen as too close to call.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kenyatta, the 55-year-old son of Kenya\u2019s founding president, is seeking a second and final term in office.<\/p>\n<p>The final week of campaigning has been marred by the murder of a top election official and claims of vote-rigging.<\/p>\n<p>Observers say the leading candidates both avoided inflammatory speeches as polling day drew closer. In 2007 more than 1,100 Kenyans died and 600,000 were displaced after a disputed election \u2013 an outcome neither side wants to see repeated.<\/p>\n<p>This time long snaking queues were seen at some polling stations, and video footage at one showed people injured on the ground after an apparent stampede.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter you cast your ballot, please go home,\u201d Mr Kenyatta said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo back to your neighbour. Regardless of where he or she comes from, their tribe, their colour or their religion. Shake their hand, share a meal and tell them \u2018let us wait for the results,\u2019 for Kenya will be here long after this general election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposition leader Mr Odinga, of the National Super Alliance, also addressed the public on Monday. He raised fears about vote-rigging and claimed the deployment of at least 150,000 members of the security forces was a ploy to intimidate voters.<\/p>\n<p>However, he congratulated Mr Kenyatta on his campaign, describing him as a \u201cworthy opponent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay the stronger candidate win tomorrow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Former US President Barack Obama, whose father was born in Kenya, also called for calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe choices you make in the coming days can either set Kenya back or bring it together,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a friend of the Kenyan people, I urge you to work for a future defined not by fear and division, but by unity and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eight presidential candidates are on the ballot on Tuesday, with polls open until 17:00 local time (14:00 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>To win outright, a candidate needs 50% plus one vote, and at least 25% of the votes in 24 of Kenya\u2019s 47 counties.<\/p>\n<p>If that threshold is not met it will trigger a run-off vote between the top two candidates, with the winner requiring a simple majority.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a style=\"display:none\" rel=\"follow\" href=\"http:\/\/megatheme.ir\/\" title=\"\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633\">\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#13; People are voting in Kenya\u2019s general election amid fears that the result could trigger communal violence.
